This chart applies your fees (upfront + ongoing, as entered) to different loan sizes, keeping the rate, term and frequency the same. The same dollar fees become a smaller percentage on a bigger loan — which is why comparison rates matter most on smaller loans, top-ups, or short-term lending.

What is a comparison rate, and why does it matter?
The advertised rate (or "headline rate") is just the interest rate — it doesn't include fees. The comparison rate combines the interest rate with most upfront and ongoing fees into a single percentage, so you can compare loans on a like-for-like basis.
Australian law requires lenders to display a comparison rate alongside the advertised rate for consumer credit products like home loans. A loan with a low advertised rate but high fees can easily end up costing more than a loan with a slightly higher rate and low fees — the comparison rate is designed to reveal exactly that.
This calculator uses a standard present-value formula based on the methodology in the National Credit Code to estimate the comparison rate from the inputs you provide. Lenders' official comparison rates may differ slightly, as they can include additional fees, government charges, or assumptions (such as a standard $150,000 loan over 25 years) not entered here. Always check the lender's Key Facts Sheet for the official figure.
